Will Fernandez

Born in Las Villas, Cuba, on January 17, 1959—17 days after the start of the Castro revolution—Will immigrated to the United States in 1962 with his parents and sister, fleeing communism.

He showed an early aptitude for drawing and sculpting at the age of three, a passion that would shape his lifelong artistic journey. Over the years, he lived in Texas, Miami, North Carolina, and ultimately Key West, absorbing diverse cultural influences along the way.

Will built a career in commercial art and sculpture, working professionally until 1999, when he made a decisive break from both commercial work and a conventional lifestyle. He relocated to Key West, embracing a more bohemian existence devoted entirely to creating art on his own terms.

The island’s natural beauty, its local characters, free-roaming chickens, and its overall imperfect infrastructure continue to serve as a constant source of inspiration.

His paintings are impressionistic in style, executed in acrylic on canvas. As a sculptor, he works mainly in raku-fired clay, while also exploring wood, stone, and papier-mâché.
